In the last 8 years traveling in the US and Canada has become very expensive indeed.  You used to be able to do road trips for little money and stay at hotels or motels for $60 USD a night and that would have plenty of room for 2 people.  Nowadays we are talking about $150 USD a night and sometime more.  Even if it is in a not so important medium sized city in rural USA.  Canada is not much better.  When I drive through BC in the Rocky Mountains, I am now lucky to find something for $100 CAD in the off-season.
